A Notice to Users of MySqueezebox.com Outside the USA

We recently got a number of questions from people living outside the USA who are having issues accessing MySqueezebox.com or their Squeezeboxes connected to MySqueezebox.com.

The symptoms are that you can’t log into the service or your players don’t show up in iPeng.
This often happens on new devices where you run iPeng for the first time.

What is the Reason for the Issue?

The problem can be related to an iOS feature called “iCloud Private Relay”. When you access sites on the internet, Private Relay hides the origin of your request and can improve your privacy.

However, other than what Apple describes in their documentation, with Private Relay all http (unencrypted) traffic is being relayed through the Unites States.
Since Logitech operates separate MySqueezebox.com infrastructure for the USA and for the rest of the world, controlling a Squeezebox outside the USA using the US infrastructure doesn’t work (and vice versa). This has been a problem when using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) towards the USA and it is a problem with Private Relay.
Private Relay is enabled by default on new devices, which is why problems often occur there.

What can I Do?

The easiest solution is to disable iCloud Private Relay on your iPhone or iPad.
You can do this in the iCloud Settings of your device. You can find them if you select  your Name/Account in the iOS Settings and then go to the “iCloud” menu.
There is a Setting called “Private Relay” and that needs to be “off”.

iOS Clipboard Confirmation

With the latest few iOS versions, iPeng may have indicated that it wants to access the clipboard.
Since iOS 16, there is a query if the user wants to allow this:

iOS asks for confirmation about clipboard access

What does that question mean?

The clipboard is used to copy data between apps, it is generally accessible to every app and public. iOS, however, now indicates access or asks for permission.

Why does iPeng access that data?iPeng asks what to do with link in clipboard

iPeng checks if there is a link to playable music in the clipboard.
If this is the case, it asks whether you want to play the music on the current player or save the link to favorites.
Many of you use this to play music links you get from friends via email or social media or find on websites.
If iPeng doesn’t detect a link or you don’t save or play the link, iPeng does nothing else with the data and will not further use it.

I don’t want to see this message, what can I do?

You can configure the message in your iPhone/iPad settings and grant iPeng general access to the clipboard or always prohibit it.
You can find the setting under “Settings->iPeng” directly in iOS/iPadOS.

Does iPeng collect my data?

iPeng does not transmit any data to us and does not collect any user data locally. It only stores the data to control your server locally on your device. If you use MySqueezebox.com or music services, these services receive data about your usage. This data is the same as when you use your Squeezebox without iPeng. For example, if you play a music link, the provider of the link may also see this.

iPeng 9.7.1 Fixes VoiceOver Support

Good news for those who use iPeng with VoiceOver, Apple’s accessibility feature for users with vision impairments.

Since iOS 13 came out, there was an issue in iPeng that prevented VoiceOver users from accessing the MultiPlayer control, meaning they were unable to switch players and reach player settings.

This was due to a change in how iOS handled the assignment of visible items to items made accessible through VoiceOver.

iPeng 9.7.1 now contains a long-awaited fix for this issue. Unfortunately fixing the problem wasn’t easy and took us quite a while, so we would like to take the opportunity to apologize for the inconvenience caused and thank our customers for their patience.

In addition to this, the update speeds up artist image rendering significantly, fixes the text color for Search and Web Browsing in dark mode, and contains smaller improvements like better handling of dialog boxes on newer iPhone models.

Except for the changes in artist image rendering, all of the above applies to both iPeng and iPeng ue.

Have fun!

iPeng is back – now supporting scheduled switching between color schemes in iOS 13

Apple’s launch of the latest iOS version on September 19 with major changes across the entire system has prompted us to update the iPeng app too to give you a consistent and troublefree experience with it under iOS 13, the most relevant changes relating to color schemes (light/dark modes).

While iPeng has had its own dark mode with automatic color scheme selection for years, it now adopts iOS’s newly introduced light/dark mode system setting. For iPeng 9.7 that means that the default („automatic“) setting for the scheme now uses iOS’s scheduled switching between light/dark modes instead of ambient lighting, providing you with a system-wide consistent behavior of your color schemes.

In addition to the new default setting there will of course still be the option to select a specific mode (light/dark) in iPeng.

Further enhancements include bug fixes and details.

As always: have fun with iPeng!

iPeng 9.6: Big Change for the Big Screen!

Like every year during fall, Apple have presented their new devices and thus laid the foundation for changes to iPeng. Once again, that kept us busy to deliver the best design and functionality.

For the iPhone XS Max, the challenge was to adapt to the truly huge (6.5-inch!) screen. The Apple Watch Series 4, whose design Apple – by ist own words – has not only “evolved”, but “transformed”, also comes with a larger display and rounded corners, which made design adjustments necessary.

iPeng now also supports the following new features on the Apple Watch:

  • multicolored complications
  • more formats for complications
  • implementation of the curved corner complication design

The new version is now available as a free update in the App Store. Another update for iPeng UE will follow shortly.

It’s just “iPeng” again

One last note on the product name of iPeng, because there are news here as well: From now on you will find the app in the App Store under “iPeng” again, not under “iPeng 9”: Since iPeng Classic got removed from the App Store by Apple, we decided to return iPeng to it’s original product name since the distinction is no longer necessary.

And as always: Have fun with the app!
