iPeng 1.2.1 Upgrade available

Today, iPeng 1.2.1 got released on the App Store.
iPeng 1.2.1 is a maintenance release which primarily improves the compatibility with Squeezebox Server 7.4 and fixes some errors but it does come with a few improvements as well.
Improvements include:
- Better handling of context menus in SBS 7.4, especially including the “Add to favorites” and “Remove from favorites” menus available on the Squeezebox Controller to streaming service context menus.
- Better detection of „hold“ gesture avoids accidental triggering of actions;
- iPeng reconnects to the server by server name; this improves automatic reconnection in DHCP managed networks, you no longer need the “Forget Last Server” Option
- Status icons for Alarms and Sleep plus a lot of additional icons for plugins;
- Support for Slide Show Artwork (e.g. in the Flickr app);
- Sorting of search results, Albums returned by “Search” now are sorted as defined in iPeng’s settings plus additional information for the albums will be shown;
- If “Play Single Tracks” option is set in settings, the “Play Shuffled” item in Playlists and Albums will be replaced by “Play All” since “Play All” is not redundant in this context.

Hi,
After updating to 1.2.1 IPeng no longer see any player. I have 3 player and iPeng have worked fine until the update.
I have tried:
* Shutting off/on the iPod
* Removing iPeng and installing it again
* Removing the server (192,168,1,100:9001) and using nas:9001
I cant se the server on the list along with mysqueezebox.com – but no players.
Please help

I have the same problem as Flemstef. After the 1.2.1 update I can no longer see my players connected to MySqueezebox.com. I use MySqueezebox.com primarily. I have rebooted my iPhone, removed the app and reinstalled.
I have also installed and configured a SqueezeServer, when this is running I can connect. It shows that my players are connected to SqueezeNetwork and I cannot control them?!
Please Help, I need my iPeng!!!

do you still see this? Flemmings issue was a network problem but if you use MySqueezebox.com: that (the Logitech service) had issues over the weekend which meant you could not use it with iPeng or the Squeezebox Controller. That should be fixed now.

Hi,
I’m new to iPeng (and iPhone), but as a dedicated SqueezeBox user, i have also jumped into the i-Peng/Phone combination. And what a great combination that is!.
BUT, (you saw it coming), what is happening with the Search function?
My Sq.center is served by a ReadyNas Duo = not many muscles here (+18.000 songs). The Sc.Controller gives me the opportunity to ONLY search Artists or Albums, and not start the search before I am ready. This give me satisfying response.
As I can see it, the iPeng Search function tries to be smart, and start the search in Everything as soon as I have entered two characters. This kills everything!
Please, fix …

Does the track search still hurt when it is run only once and as the last one? As it is currently designed, a full “track” search will be issued only _after_ the “normal” search is run, so you can already see albums and artists.
Also, search is being redesigned in SBS 7.5 so this may have som impact on how iPeng behaves, anyway.

It does not look like the search process gives me the Artist/Album results before the Tracks result (maybe a Update issue in the code?). The response time is very bad compared to a Artist/Album search by the the Sqz. Controller.
But, the very bad thing is, that it seems like the server gets busy delivering the result for the Track search, and I get bad response times all over.
I was not aware of the redesign of the search. Thanks for the info. Hopefully they will not mess up the Artist/Album search

It depends on the number of results. A first batch is done right away – but that’s the way the server’s normal “search” command works (which is also being used on the web interface), maybe I break this up and use individual category searches.
But details and a longer list of tracks is then being requested when the first search is done and this also only happens when you press “Search” or leave the input field.
I believe the real issue here is the incremental search since it starts early (with two characters) and provides little information initially (only two characters). The more info you specify the shorter search times get. Also, I believe the ReadyNas simply has too little RAM so it will swap a lot, there are more issues due to that then just search; probably it gets better with 7.5’s embedded branch, should that be adopted on ReadyNAS it does indeed perform a bit better.

Well, it’s possible but it’s a complete change in the way the search works.
You can search (on the server) within any table, e.g. Albums, Artists, Genres, etc. on it’s own. That would mean to issue several search requests until you have all the information. Also, the individual searches (at least for tracks) might be slower since more information is being requested.
And then there’s the server’s “search” command. This _always_ searches Albums, Artists, Genres and Tracks. This is what iPeng currently uses. Since the results for “Tracks” are incomplete (too little information to do everything iPeng does), iPeng issues an additional “tracks” search after the other results have been returned and matches the results. But this is not being done during the incremental search, which is why you will not see an artwork or album name in the result list during that phase. You probably didn’t notice it, yet, because you don’t see the results as long as there are also artists and albums being returned, just enter a whole track title and you’ll see what I mean.

So what you say is, that if I enter “Toto” as search string, The process is as follows:
1) Request server search for “Toto” (searching Artist/Albums/Genres/Tracks) …
and when the results for this has been returned …
2) Request an extra Tracks search for “Toto” …
and when the results for this has been returned:
3) Collect the two search-results, and show the end-result to user.
I guess what I want is:
1) Request Artist search for “Toto”
2) Request Album search for “Toto”
3) Collect and return to user
(1&2 in parallell if possible).

A search UI is firstly measured in Response time (and later on accuracy)!
A fast (partial) response is MUCH better than a slow complete response.
You can always issue a more precise seach.
The ultimate iPeng search UI would be checkboxes, where you could activate/de-activate search on “Artist”, “Album”, “Genre”, “Track” etc.

Disagree on the “ultimate” UI including checkboxes and the like, the ultimate UI is simple
Your guess is wrong in one part: the results are also being shown incrementally (as soon as the server returns any information, iPeng shows it) and then the result changes.
Speed is not that big an issue on most systems, as it is on yours making convenience a factor, too.
Your alternative of doing artists and albums simultaneously w/o tracks probably would not be any faster than the current one as of my experience. Doing it sequentially could help. However, you have to be aware that the overall search will be much slower for most people if done that way.
I’ll experiment with this a bit.

I have another issue:
I don’t see the “Synchronize” button (described in the How-to section: “Now Playing”, “Synchronizing Players”). I only see the “Play” or “Pause” icons.
Is the “Synchronize” button vanished in 1.2.1? or is it an SqueezeServer-on-ReadyNas issue?

iPeng 1.2.1 cannot find my server. I was using the beta squeezeboxserver-7.4.2-29665-arm-linux on my Qnap 109 without any problems. I thought the problem might be something to do with it being a beta release so I downgraded back to squeezeboxserver-7.4.1. Eureka! It found the server. But sadly only for a few seconds and it hasn’t been able to find it again since. I’ve also tried restarting everything and uninstalling and reinstalling iPeng but nothing seems to work.
I’m at a loss now. Any ideas?

do you see your server when you open the web interface on your iPhone? Is it still running (few seconds sounds a bit like your server was going down).
Generally, 7.4.2 should be more stable than 7.4.1.
What do you see on iPeng’s player/server page (when you swipe right on NowPlaying)?
Is your iPhone/iTouch on the same subnet (e.g. 192.168.0.x vs 192.168.1.x) as your Qnap?
Have you tried to add the server manually:

Please also check the following setting in Squeezebox Server:
Settings->Advanced->Performance->Artwork Resampling, please make sure this is set to the “fast” setting if problems persist, maybe your server hangs because it’s busy converting thumbnails.
Are you using “.BMP” cover art? There have been reports of Squeezebox Server crashing when trying to convert that, it’s not officially supported (and definitely does NOT work with iPeng).

‘add all’ seems to do nothing since the 1.2.1 upgrade. I would expected it to add the tracks to the end of my playlist. ‘add next’ does add the tracks, but is not as useful as ‘add all’ because I often add whole albums and it inserts the next one in the middle of the previous album. I’ve tried both ‘play single tracks’ on and off. what am I doing wrong? thanks (great app btw)

Hello,
after updating to squeezecenter 7.4.1 and iPeng 1.2.1 I am having grave difficulties to synchronize the cache – it stops after reaching albums with the letter “C”. My music library currently currently holds about 15.000 title and I am running squeezcenter on a ReadyNAS Duo. Though I know that this is not the most performant NAS, I do not think that this should rule out a successful synchronization – especially as it worked fine with the prior versions of squeezecenter and iPeng. Are there any general incompatibilities or known issues with this?

hello.
Having trouble with artist browsing with the letters to the right. all artists are listet under “z”. i had borrowed a ipod touch with ipeng installed, and it worked fine. havent made any changes since. have tied to flush cache several times, and at one time it semed like it worked but the syncronization got stuck. everything else works like a charm.
amazing program.
any chance there will be added a line out on the ipod touch, like on the squeeze remote. that would be nice…

there could be two reasons for this:
1. Please make sure your iPhone doesn’t turn on the screen saver while downloading data or enable “preserve connection”.
2. (more likely if it worked before): there’s an issue with 7.4.1 and illegal characters in tags. You could try 7.4.2 beta or try to clean up the tags. Note: foreign characters are NOT illegal, only control characters are.

this Looks like a code page issue. You probably have some artists that start with a character that your server sorts as “smaller than A” while iPhone finds it to be “sorted after Z”.
What Operating System is your server running on? Do you know which locale it uses?

Freenas is only english but squeezeserver is set to danish.
letters in squeezebox server is working fine.

I am using MySqueezebox.com and no, re-starts didn’t correct it.
Calling up MySqueezebox.com on my laptop, it shows me logged in, but “Not Connected” on the Player page, while “Connected” on the “Squeezebox Radio” page.
All iPeng settings on the handheld read “Off.”
Really odd that volume control worked so well.

Hi, I just bought you iPeng app, and am having trouble with three synced players (two wireless and one ethernet).
When I skip to a position within a track all players become out of sync. I have to go to the web interface and nudge the slider to fix it again. Hopefully this can be fixed soon, as I’m using this feature quite often, and now I have to use the web interface anyway.

Hm, that should not be an iPeng issue. Works fine for me. It’s the server’s responsibility to keep the devices synced.
Which server version do you use? What kind of Squeezebox and which file type is this?
Does it work correctly when you use the web interface?

I use 7.4.1 on a Windows 7 64-bit. They are all identical Squeezebox 3 players. The file is a 128 kbps CBR MP3 with a duration of around 57 minutes.
If the players are out of sync using the slider in iPeng, I can use the slider in the web interface to force them into sync again.
It seems consistent that the two wireless players are in sync with each other, but the ethernet player is around 5 seconds ahead.

If it works as designed, iPeng should only send the “time” command (that’s what the slider does, it specifies where in the track the playback should jump to) to the master in the group of synced players and the server should take care of synchronously changing the playback on all players.

Oh, and my 7.4.2 comment was not without reason. I’ve seen a lot of sync issues with 7.4.x, mainly with the new players but that’s probably because I test these more often.
7.4.2 is just a “bugfix collection” and probably the most stable version you can get right now. It will never be released but only contains fixes against 7.4.1 that can’t wait until 7.5 is ready, which will be the next official release.
What makes 7.4.2 relatively stable is the fact that it contains absolutely no new features.
Although I personally feel that 7.5 will probably be a better release than 7.4, it feels much more stable now than the 7.4 betas ever did.

There’s one issue I can see which is that iPeng sends the “time” command TWICE. I don’t know, maybe this causes some confusion on the server side.

I’m sorry, but i have given up trying to make estimates about when releases will be ready, we are currently developing this but also have some other things to get done in iPeng for that release, e.g. accessibility so it’s hard to give an exact schedule.

I’m using Pandora. None of the actions on the “Song Info” seem to do anything. They light then clear and nothing happens. Have these functions been implemented or am I having a problem?

Great app! I use it all the time. I’m having an issue adding tracks to the playlist from within Rhapsody. “Play” and “play next” both seem to work fine but “add” does not. Is this a known issue with Rhapsody? I’m using iPeng 1.2.1 and SB server 7.4.2. Thanks!

OK, if it adds the whole album: this seems to be the behavior right now if “Play Other Tracks in Album” is set in the player settings in Squeezebox Server.
If you don’t want this and only use iPeng, you could disable this setting, iPeng will PLAY whole albums even without that setting.

It’s a really great app but I’m having an issue with maintaining sync with the server when Autolock is set to off. With Autolock on, iPeng immediately re-establishes contact with the server after wake up from sleep. However, when Autolock is off, contact is lost after about 5 minutes. I then have to close down iPeng to re-stablish a connection.

I got it working..mostly.
I assumed what I needed to do is upgrade my Slimserver software. The computer that had been my server is running OSX 10.3.9 and I still haven’t found a version of the driver that will run with Tiger.
I downloaded the software to my newer laptop (MBP) with a smaller music library, and it’s working well.
But..only some of the album artwork shows up. Albums bought on itunes are there, but albums I ripped don’t show up. They’re all visible on my Itunes?
Suggestions?
That said, ipeng is a phenomenal product and a quantum leap beyond the clunky, old remote. Thanks for great work and a tremendous value.
But about those album covers…

Yes, iPeng needs a server version of at least 7.0, Slimserver won’t work.
On the album art: Did you enable the iTunes integration in the server (from the Web Interface it’s “Settings->iTunes”, I believe). This could help.

question for you. in the ipeng settings, you can change whether when adding songs if you add all songs in an album versus just single tracks. My question is, what does your setting do? I know you have to make the change on the squeezebox end but I’m wondering what happens if you don’t also make the change on your end? Is there any practical differnce?
As I know you are aware the current functionality in sb is awful–inconsistent and full of buggy behavior. I am trying to make the best of a bad situation and am wondering if a combincation of settings on ipeng and sb might help.

Yea. I agree it can be a bit confusing. Was easier back in the old days when Squeezebox Server just did it “wrong”.
So here’s how it works.
1. “Play Single Tracks” in iPeng is OFF (the default):
- when you select a track in “play” mode, iPeng will Play the whole album starting from the track you select.
- in “add” and “play next” modes, iPeng will add the track you select and only that track.
- If you use the context menu on a track, behavior depends on the server setting, but follows the same logic as in iPeng.
- If you use Rhapsody, Napster et al. behavior depends on the server version. in 7.4 I believe depending on the server setting always the whole album (or a single) is played AND added! Playing a whole album is expected to work independent of the server setting but obviously sometimes doesn’t but only plays the first track. This is a bug in MySqueezebox.com and will be fixed (hopefully).
- Custom Browse has it’s own setting but this should not affect the “normal” operation only the use of the context menu.
2. If “Play Single Tracks” is ON in iPeng, the behavior depends on the server setting.
- If the server has “play other tracks in album” enabled, I believe everything works as under “1.” since this overrides iPeng’s setting.
- If the setting on the server is OFF, iPeng will only “play” the track you select when you are in “play” mode. Everything else should work as in “1.”.
Under the current circumstances and given the confusion that currently is present in SBS I’d recommend to set “play other tracks in album” to “OFF” on the server if you only use iPeng. iPeng doesn’t assume anything about this setting and doesn’t need it since it’s able to play albums itself, independent of this setting.

This is really piss poor. Not in your case–you, unfortunately, have to program around folks who can’t do the basics right. I mean, adding songs and building playlist is at the core of the Squeezebox. It is the main activity the majority of the time for the vast majority of the users and Logitech can not get it right. I can not figure out why they just don’t emulate Sonos and build a UI like that. It is intuitive enough that you can pass around the remote at a party and not have to worry about 1) someone erasing the current playlist or 2) having to explain all of the permutations of different button sequences and what the behavior is. How hard can this be?

No, the next update will be 1.3 which focuses on iPeng as a player.
There is no need for a 7.5 update, iPeng 1.2.1 works fine with 7.5.

Another question on adding songs. Just did the 7.5 upgrade and see some of the bugs (on the logitech) side have been fixed. I can now set it to only add one song at a time and be able to add albums correctly. One thing I did notice. When I use the duet controller and select to play a song using the center button, it clears the playlist and only adds that song. Great–works as expected. When I use iPeng, though, and select a song by tapping on it, it adds that song and all othe songs on the album. Is that correct? This is done in Rhapsody. When I select something from my iTunes using iPeng, it only adds the song I select and does not add all other songs on the album. Not sure if this is part of the “design decision” issues Logitech has or if there is something I’m missing. Just trying to figure out if I can get it to work where it only adds one song regardless of what I do (except for adding all via albums). If I can get this to work, I should be more or less all set.

Hi!
I´ve got a SB Boom, MBP (on 10.6.3 and SB server 7.5 installed) and iPeng on my iPhone 3GS (fw 3.1.2).
So far I´m pretty satisfied with iPeng and all it´s features.
Usually when I open iPeng, it will take some time before it connects up to SB Boom (and or SB server?), so for a while iPeng is just inactive…
And sometimes it connects really fast and I can browse my music and radiochannels.
1. Is there something I´m doing wrong, or can do to make it connect immedately when I open iPeng everytime?
In iPeng Settings I can use Wake-On-LAN, but which MAC-address am I going to enter here; my Mac´s MAC, the routers MAC or SB Booms MAC-address? I´m a noob… sorry!
2. If I want to stream music from my Mac from e.g. Spotify via Nicecast, can I use iPeng and enter the stream-url from there, or do I have to enter the stream-address directly in the Boom?

Wake-On-LAN is to wake up the computer on which your Squeezebox Server runs, in this case the Mac. It has to use a wired network connection (WOL doesn’t work over WiFi) and you have to enter the MAC address of the Mac (MAC, Mac, confusing, I admit), you can get that one from the computer’s network settings.
This will only help if your server was falling to sleep. Another usual issue with connection speed is the WiFi connection. iPhone shuts down the WiFi connection when it’s not used and will re-establish it then when you start iPeng. With some routers this can be slow. There’s little you can do about that except for experimenting with your router setup. You will see that this is the issue if there is no WiFi logo in the status bar when you start iPeng and it doesn’t connect.
iPeng always connects to the server, never directly to the Squeezebox, btw.

I have sorted most out with Nicecast now, and iPeng is coming along on the way.
But there is serious problems with dropped connections between my Mac and SB server and the Squeezebox boom, but that´s another story…
Now I just hope there will be a firmware-update for the SB Boom and also a real stable release of the SB server.
Another question; since the Squeezebox Boom is WiFi, why can´t there be a controller using WiFi directly to the Boom, now it´s only infrared, or WiFi via iPeng through the SB server?

Hi,
the way the Squeezeboxes work they simply don’t work without a server, they are not standalone products. There’s “MySqueezebox.com” if you don’t want to run an own server – and that works with iPeng, too – but without a server the Squeezebox does nothing so it would not really be worthwhile to talk to it.
Using it without Squeezebox Server would mean you’d have to write your own server instead.

That said, I have one minor improvement suggestion and a question:
Any update possible?
Suggestion for 1.3 – Please change the library button in the play now screen. A simple arrow is not very intuitive…
Question – When is 1.3 coming? I know you said you dont try to predict, but that was in January
I’ll jump to buy it when it launches with the ipeng quality stamp.

I may be missing a setting/preference somewhere. Under an Artist search I see matches for Composer as well as Artist. For example, a Bob Dylan search shows all his albums as Artist but also shows all albums where other Artists have a song of his recorded with Dylan listed as Composer. I would rather see only Artist matches. Sorry again if I am overlooking a setting. If not I would certainly like to see an option to return Artist searches based on Artist Only / Artist – Composer.

Hi, I am using the latest Squeezebox server on a Vortexbox PC that is attached directly to my hifi. I downloaded ipeng today and the functionality is great. One slight problem is that when I change tracks in the album or artist view, the track starts to play from a few seconds in, not at the begining of the track. Any ideas what could cause this?

That’s a known issue in the server, it’s actually the same if you use the Squeezebox Server or the UI on one of the newer Squeezebox models (Touch, Radio). I believe there’s a bug for this in

But it is not something iPeng can influence, this is within the database code,

The music is in FLAC and when I choose a different song in the Squeezebox web interface than what is playing, it starts from the beginning of the song. When I choose a different song from the same or different album in iPeng, the song starts to play from perhaps 5-10 seconds or so ahead of the start.
I use an ‘old’ shuttle PC that I installed Vortexbox on, connected to the HiFi. I have no actual squeezebox devices and I am not using an external DAC (as yet).

Regarding the Composer showing up in the Artist menu. I have double checked in Squeezebox Server and the listings I see when you select an Artist on the Artists list do not include albums where the Artist is listed as Composer. I am using Squeezebox Server Version: 7.5.0 – r30464 @ Thu Apr 1 05:38:26 PDT 2010.
I do see a setting under the MyMusic tab that allows you to include Composer, Conductor or Band/Orchestra in the Artist list. I always keep these unchecked. If I do check Composer then on the Squeezebox Server I see both Artist and Composers on the top level Artist list AND Albums by the Artist and Composer when I select an Artist. In this case the iPeng interface reflects this correctly. But if I uncheck that Composer flag the listing on Squeezebox Server shows only Artists under the Artist list AND only Artist Albums when selecting an Artist. However on the iPeng, the Artist list is correct (only Artists shown) but if I select an Artist I still see albums with Artist and Composer. Not what I see in Squeezebox Server.
I apologize for the length of this explanation.

Sorry, I’ve written that wrongly, I did not want to say “Squeezebox Server” but “Squeezebox Controller”.
I know the server does it differently.
The server setting does not affect the CLI interface which iPeng and the newer Squeezebox models use. This is actually a known issue or to be precise I believe Logitech doesn’t regard it as an issue but it’s supposed to be by design.
As I said: there is nothing iPeng can do about it since I can’t dig into the database remotely.

What happens if you select a song from the current playlist?
I still believe this is an issue with the software player on the Vortexbox. All iPeng is doing (in this case) is sending a command to play the ALBUM and then to skip to the correct song. It sends these two commands wrapped into one message so they get executed immediately by the server.
One thing you could try is to set “play single tracks” in the iPeng settings and then set the player settings on the server to “play other songs in album”. This means playing a whole album will not always work but most of the time and maybe the server handles it better then.

Hi. I sent an email on this, then found this page. When holding onto a song, a context menu comes up and you can select Pandora. It then goes through pages of choices, but the final page which on the Duet controller lets you create a new station based on the song. The iPeng app does nothing. If on the other hand I create the Pandora station already, then go to the iPeng app, and click and hold, none of the choices do anything. Such as “I like this song”, “Don’t play this song”, etc. So basically most of the functionality to create stations and preferences for Pandora do not work, even though the menus do come up. All works find on the Duet controller or the main web interface. Are these known bugs? Will they be fixed? Thanks, Allan

I like Ipeng very much, but after upgrading Squeezebox Server to 7.5.1 and my Itouch to IOS 4.0 I can’t download the database.
The synchronizing cache bar shows that the download has started, but it gets stucked after I while and nothing happens.
All artists are downloaded, but not the albums. I can see the albums via “now playing”, but not under albums.
How to solve? Downgrade to some older versions or what? I have fluched the cahce a number of times without any result.

is your server running on Windows?
This sounds a lot like the “Virus Scanner Issue”. It most often happens with McAfee but some other virus scanners are also affected.
Please exclude “*.MYI” files from virus scanning, if you are using McAfee have a look at this:

Also, please make sure that your iTouch doesn’t enable the screen saver while the album cache is still being synchronized since this will stop the download.
Another (though more rare) possibility would be an issue with illegal characters in one of the tags (Album name, Artist name, Year) that causes the server to break off the transmission. Note: “Foreign” characters are NOT illegal, illegal characters include control codes and the like.

Well, as said before: no dates anymore.
But 1.2.5, which is the iOS4 release and has a lot of the features planned for 1.3 (except for playback, unfortunately) is in the final stages of beta testing and will hopefully be out soon.
