Penguins don’t live alone…
So, week 1 is almost over and iPeng got quite a few downloads and one update. I keep hearing “I told you so” from a certain penguin and I get questions on where this is supposed to lead to from everybody else. So, this is about the vision thing.
1. Coolio loves simple. This is supposed to become the most simple means of controlling a home stereo setup. Including music database, live streaming and everything. Vision: everything is buried on some server you don’t need to touch. Music is played through a streaming client. Everything is managed on your iPhone/iTouch. No walking to the stereo to see a display, no clumsy remote, no PCs that have to run all day. Just sitting on the sofa, listening to music.
2. Coolio likes to travel. He’s not always at home, so streaming to the iPod/iPhone will be great as well.
3. Coolio is demanding. So the performance of iPeng will be improved, the functionality increased to support more of SqueezeCenter’s options and eventually, we want to see a native app looking even better on iPhone/iTouch.
4. Coolio loves cool. We want to get music databases out of the nerd corner. Cool and simple devices are the key to this. That’s the vision.
And no, Coolio got nothing to do with Linux, he’s a gadget freak, he’s got everything…

First let me say awesome job. The application is exactly what I was getting ready to sit down and code. So you saved me a lot of time, and my marriage probably
Few suggestions:
1) a way to get back to the home screen from the now playing screen
2) any way to add the “syncronize” functionality thats now in squeezecenter? Id love to be able to use my ipod touch to control all my squeezeboxes at once when having a party
3) AJAX the volume slider on the now playing side so it doesnt have to reload the page and it also make the volume change pretty dramatic usually.
4) a way to change between players on the now playing screen.
Anyway again awesome job, loving the “sonos” like ability my squeezebox now has.

Snoogly,
currently I am doing a major redesign of the NowPlaying screen some of which you can already see in the last experimental release. On the first sight the change might not look as dramatic (decent UI changes) but internally it’s completely new. This has three reasons:
1. The logic is the same as the upcoming native version so this will be much easier to develop and maintain
2. We are working on a new plugin interface that allows lots of different track specific information to be displayed on the NowPlaying screen, like Artist Bio, Album Info, Lyrics,…
3. To support this NowPlaying now has several pages that can be selected through a “swipe” – something you are familiar with on the iPhone but AFAIK nobody else has tried for a webapp.
Since this is quite a bit of stuff and the plugin interface has to mature, there will be another “unstable” release first – probably this weekend, maybe even today
It will WORK quite reliably, but since the plugin stuff is beta and requires separate plugin installation I will still mark it “unstable”.
Cheers,
Coolio

That’s good to hear. I tried the most recent ‘unstable’ version – and liked it, apart from the way the plugin interface slid over the front of the artwork screen, and then kind of wouldn’t go away. But that might have been related to the terrible problems I have been having with squeezecenter.
I am so happy with ipeng – it really is the only reason I bought an ipod touch … though I must admit I now can’t live without the touch. I can even check my email on the toilet!!!
My most esoteric use of ipeng is to turn on BBC radio on the player in the lounge (from my bed), so my pet bird can wake up gently. Now he doesn’t get a shock when I go into the lounge and turn on the light.
